Planning Ahead

Back in Mid October I went to the butt crack of West Virginia to shoot some time lapses but that trip was pretty much for scouting purposes.  I have some serious plans in the late spring of 2013 for this big beast you see below.

Go BIG or go home

or in this case, go as high up as you possibly can to shoot timelape stuff.  I was in a tower in Roslyn last night shooting 3 time lapses from the 27th floor.  If you know D.C. / Northern VA, you know about the height restrictions.  This may be the highest roof in the entire area.  Here are 2 stills from 2 of the 3 time-lapses I shot.  Enjoy

Plan B

This weekend was hit or miss and today was the miss day.  I got to this park just outside of Old Town Alexandria to shoot a timelapse of the sunrise but right where the sun popped up was overcast.  I took a few random photos to make me stop thinking about how I should've stayed in bed.

Street Music

If you walk around D.C. you'll find tons of street guys play steal drums, buckets, saxophones or guitars.    This guy was killing it solo.

Sunset from the Lincoln Memorial

Today I went to the Lincoln Memorial to shoot a timelapse of the fabulous D.C. / VA traffic and the sunset.  This is not a still from it but I wanted to do a long exposure to see how it looked.  The timelapse it self came out well.

Sunrise Timelapse

After partying it up big time last night with my lady or in other woods watching a movie until 2am, I woke up at 5:30 to head to the Mount Vernon area to do a timelapse of the sunrise.  The spot I set up camp was the first time I've been and I plan on going back for sure.

The Eastern Market

Today I went to the Eastern Market to get some meat and lots of it.  It's also a great spot to take some photos.

Petting Zoo

This weekend after I completed a commercial shoot I headed over and met Erin and her niece at the Reston Zoo to pet animals.

Pacers Running Store projects

For the past month I've been doing a series of video projects for Pacers Running Stores.  They range from product skits to store profile videos.  I don't want to load up the blog with every video but here are a few.  

This weekend

On Saturday I was supposed to have a video shoot but that was cancelled so instead of sleeping in, I decided to head to Great Falls to check the flood damage that bitch hurricane Sandy left behind.  I ended up shooting a few time lapses over a 2 hour period.

Downtown Timelapse

Last night I did 2 different timelapse shots over at Logan Circle.  I'll be shooting 20-30 more different time-lapse downtown for my mini time-lapse project that's coming out in May 2013.

More from Seneca Rocks WVA

While in West Virginia last weekend and doing several timelapses I had some time to climb Seneca Rocks.

West Virginia Gas Stations

I may have passed 10-15 gas stations I should have taken photos of.  They are so old and rustic looking.

Old Rides

While hiking Seneca I found this old ass Ford truck.  I would love to pull this thing out of the woods and restore  it and hit the M street strip.  Well maybe not me but some man could (old Seinfeld joke).








 

Giant Telescopes and Cliffs

This past friday I had access to the grounds of the Green Bank Telescope.  It's the worlds largest steerable radio telescope.  My #1 objective was to shoot a few time-lapses throughout the night.  I had to fight below freezing conditions and a few snow showers but when the skies opened up, this is what I got.



After waking up with my toes frozen to it's neighbor toe and 4 trips back and forth from where I set up camp to my car via mountain bike I headed to Seneca Rocks and met Will.  After hiking all day I set up camp and shot 2 more timelapses until 3am.

Stop Worrying

It's been over a month since we started filming for this the surf film but I hope to get back there soon.  The swell is great today and even bigger tomorrow but I'm all booked up.  Maybe in a few weeks for one final session to close out the season.

In a few days I'll be shooting at a location that no one's been granted access to shoot ever.  I'm not saying I'm special or the coolest dude ever, I just think people have over looked this spot.  In the meantime, here are some randoms from the past few months.  I'll have loads of photos from this weekends shoot coming on next weeks blog update.

Weekend Randoms

I've been editing like a mad man for the past few days.  In between all the editing I managed to go to a Nats game and go out and work on a top secret project I mentioned on my blog a few weeks ago. It's almost complete and I should be posting it soon.  In the mean time, here are some images.  Hopefully I can get back out next week and bust out some time-lapse shots.

When Lightning Strikes

Here is a still of a timelapse I shot tonight.  Tons of lightning and tons of rain which rolled in and eventually ruined my time-lapse.

Just after sundown I stopped by this bridge that goes over route 66 to scout for a possible future time-lapse shot.  I'm sure not sure I'll come back for a time-lapse but we'll see.

TimeLapse Central

In the past week I've gotten tons of new timelapse gear and of course I took them out this weekend to test the new toys out at Great Falls.  The gear is a Kessler Stealth Slider, 500 series motor with controller, low profile ball head and 90 degree plate for vertical shots.  I also got a new carbon fiber Manfrotto tripod and 055 ball head.  So far, everything worked GREAT.  Here are some images from Yesterdays test shoot.  The timelapse from the still below came out perfect as a Sports Illustrated Swim Suit cover.

Finally-Swell, Surfing and footage

Back in June, I wrote about putting together my first surf film.  Although I've filmed surfing before and put together a few montages, this was a whole new beast to me.  We've been waiting the entire summer for a good swell and good swell is exactly what we got this week.  I've never seen waves consistantly barrelling and as big as we had today.  Kevin, Dean, Chase and others met us at the Nags Head Fishing Pier at 6am and we got started immediately.  3 cameras, more tripods than needed and a crane and 11 people were on the session.  More to come from day 2.
